If there’s one thing we’ve learned from helping actors build their careers, it’s that auditioning on its own is never enough. Making it as an actor is a long and arduous process, and one of the most important parts is promoting yourself. If you’re not sure how to go about self-marketing, here are some tips that can help.
Marketing Yourself as an Actor on Social Media
Social media is a key way to market an actor, and a good social media strategy can be great for one’s career.
Social media helps you build your brand and name recognition, and while it can be a slow process, it can keep you top-of-mind for companies looking to work with influencers as well as casting directors.
Fill your social media pages with high-quality headshots, sections of sizzle reels, videos of performances and more. If you’re going all-in on your social media plan, make sure to publish content on a consistent schedule to keep it engaging and become pushed by the algorithm.
In addition to having a presence on social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, X, Facebook and Tiktok, it’s useful to have your own website. A website is another great way to create a branded online resume that lists all your credits and holds all your videos & headshots.
Get Your Actor Marketing Materials Together
It’s imperative that before you start marketing to have all of your marketing materials handy. Make sure they’re complete and high-quality. Items you’ll need to get include:
- Headshots
- Your acting resume
- Your video and voice clips
- Your demo reel
- Business cards
Make sure to keep these items current with new roles and acting gigs.
If you work with a talent agent or manager, make sure you have reviewed all your marketing materials together to get their feedback on the quality of what you have on hand.
Don’t Forget to Network
Never underestimate the power of people. Networking is vital in the entertainment industry, so make a habit of getting drinks or coffee with other professionals in the industry.
Remember to be nice to everyone you meet and never speak badly about others in the industry (you never know who’s listening). This could sometimes affect your chances of getting your next acting job.
Marketing is a difficult art to master, but it’s critical if you want to build a career as an actor. The important thing is to promote yourself strategically. Once you get all of your marketing materials together and get a smart marketing plan together, you’ll be ready to advance your career to the next level.
