This week on Casting Frontier’s seventh episode of The Curve, Burgandi and Govind spend time with the amazing Stuart K. Robinson, CEO of BBR Talent. He shares his powerful thoughts on succeeding as talent in the entertainment industry. He is the true multi-hyphenate who encourages us all to zero in on what we do best and make the most of it.

Robinson is a man of many hats: He’s an actor, composer, author, director, producer, career coach, motivational speaker, CEO, and he’s widely regarded as one of the top professional acting instructors in Hollywood via the Robinson Creative Lab Actor’s Studio. He also wrote the self-help book It All Begins with “I”: The “New Rules of Thinking” and the Simple Secrets to Living a Rich, Joyous and Fulfilled Life.

On top of all that, Robinson is both the father-in-law and mentor of the Grammy- and Tony-award-winning actor/singer, Leslie Odom, Jr., most known for his role as Aaron Burr in the Broadway musical Hamilton. Robinson recalls the moment Odom approached him, frustrated with the entertainment industry; in fact, he was on the brink of giving up on his performing dreams. “Sure, you can quit. That’s fine. We can talk about those things,” Robinson told Odom. “Love to see you try first. I’d love to see you try before you quit.”

A confused Odom insisted he indeed was trying hard to succeed. However, Robinson assessed the talented performer was “waiting for the phone to ring” rather than doing something to build his career every single day. Odom’s inspirational father-in-law challenged him to take more initiative, find work, and keep growing as an actor by being more efficient and deliberate. Odom told Produce Grower, “From that day forward, I have not stopped working in six years because of that advice. I’m never, ever, ever sitting on my couch waiting for the phone to ring. I just made changes.”

Robinson challenged Odom just as he does his students, asking, “What are you waiting for to grab success? Do you think success is going to knock on your door and come and grab you?” “No!” he insists. “You have to go out and get it. You have to determine the things you want, you have to speak about the things you want, and you have to put new rules in place that will allow you to claim what you want.”

During his classes, Robinson noticed this kind of straight-forward advice was exactly what his students needed to hear. “What I found was most of my classes were less about traditional acting techniques and more about helping people understand what their gift is, and to believe in themselves, and to really put themselves out there,” he says. And soon enough, something strange started to happen—professionals from a wide assortment of fields started filling the seats. Thus began Robinson’s motivational-speaking career.

Stuart K. Robinson’s inspirational philosophies come with simple yet effective methods designed to help talent reach their goals. For example, he’ll assign his students homework that’s specifically tailored to them. He says, “The reason most people don’t get what they want in life is [because] what they want is a secret. What you’ve got to do is talk about it, you’ve got to share with every person you meet, what it is that you are hoping will come into your life. If you’ll do that for a two-week period—tell everyone you meet what it is you are waiting for to come into your life—you’ll find that you get it.”

Casting Frontier’s YouTube series The Curve is hosted by Burgandi Phoenix and Govind Kumar. Make sure to check out the second half of episode seven next week. After all, Stuart K. Robinson is just getting warmed up here!
