British-American actress Lily Collins is known for the versatility of her roles, playing an out-of-place fashionista in Paris (Emily in Paris), a young woman suffering from anorexia (To the Bone), Snow White (Mirror Mirror) and Ted Bundy’s girlfriend (Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile). But the busy performer’s personal life is quite varied as well. Lily, who is the daughter of musician Phil Collins and Jill Tavelman, started her acting career at the age of two in the BBC series Growing Pains. Moving from England to Los Angeles, she would go on to study broadcast journalism at USC, write for magazine and newspaper publications, be named International Model of the Year by Spain’s Glamour magazine, and receive a Golden Globe nod for her portrayal of the aspiring actress Marla Mabrey in Rules Don’t Apply in 2016. Heck, the 31-year-old star even wrote a memoir a few years ago titled Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me.

All along the way, the talented Ms. Collins has learned many lessons, grown from her experiences, and gathered a good share of wisdom. Here are some of Lily’s inspirational quotes that reflect the positivity she brings to her daily life.

“I was never afraid of going after what I wanted and making that known, and becoming vocal about it.”

“I’ve realized the quirky things that make you different are what make you beautiful.”

“No matter what, I need to maintain my sense of self and always be true to who I am.”

“Everything happens for a reason, and of course at times it’s very discouraging. But at the end of the day, you can’t take it personally and move onward because if you let it sit with you, then it starts to eat away at you and you’re allowing someone else to steal your excitement. No one wants that.”

“When it comes to the work, I’m excited to see what people think. When it comes to the private life, that’s when I don’t pay attention.”

“I’ve grown up knowing that you put as much of your private life out there as you feel comfortable with.”

“It’s really important to stand up for yourself and not always agree with what people say if indeed you don’t feel that that’s true.”

“Think before you speak. Think before you judge. Think before you think you have a person all figured out.”

“Life works in mysterious ways, but when you find your inner glow is back and shining brighter, you know it’s right.”

“I really think everything happens for a reason.”

“In the end, when you accept yourself for who you are, and you work with what you’ve got, you couldn’t be more beautiful because you’re confident and everyone notices.”

“No matter what I’ve endured in the past, what I’ve put myself through, or what others have done to me, I have the ability and the will to move forward. I will not give up. I will not undervalue or underestimate my capabilities.”

“It truly is the power that you have deep within yourself that gives you the strength to pursue your dreams.”

“I am whole just as I am. I am defined not by my life experiences but by how I let them affect me and how I handle myself in each situation.”

“My last name may have opened doors, but I have to keep them open.”

“No matter what, I need to maintain my sense of self and always be true to who I am. And that while there are always going to be roadblocks along the way, you’re going to be just fine as long as you learn from each setback.”

“I like to wear as least amount of makeup as I can during my everyday life because I’m just all about keeping my skin healthy and hydrated, and I love to laugh and have a great time and smile—that’s when I feel the most pretty, so I just want to make sure that I stay happy.”

“I think it’s important to relate to one another about issues that you’re having because the second you open up and someone else says, ‘Oh, me too. I feel the same way,’ then all of a sudden, you feel more at peace with yourself and you can feel more confident with who you are.”

“Decisions are the endless uncertainties of life that we’ll not know if they’re right until the very end, so do the best you can and hope it’s right.”
